Remembering a Tuscan photo safari in 1998 by Kaj Bune

In 1998, I had the pleasure of wandering around Tuscany to do nothing but shoot photos and poke around the countryside. It reinforced my feelings about this part of Italy and to this day I’ve wanted to repeat the experience. My travels haven’t taken me back for such a repeat, but I’m working on it.

Here are a few photos from that trip through a truly remarkable part of the world.

A Significant Birthday Celebration for a Friend - England and Wales by Kaj Bune

A good friend of mine from the UK, master photographer, adventurer and storyteller, John Beatty, had a significant birthday last year. A surprise celebration was in the works for a few days in early October of 2021. I simply couldn’t turn down the invite by mutual friends, so despite covid restrictions and issues, I caught a flight and spent an amazing week helping to honor John, which involved a lot of cycling, hiking, beer drinking and laughing. It was a glorious time! Here are some of the photos from the trip.

Holiday Time in Oxford, England by Kaj Bune

In December of 2021, I took the opportunity to travel with my partner and her sister to Oxford, England for the holidays. It’s a wonderful city, full of history and nooks and crannies for the curious. 800-year-old pubs, very old libraries, museums and natural beauty as well. Here are a few photos from our time knocking about in Oxford.

Hanging out with Graham Zimmerman in Bend, Oregon by Kaj Bune

In Autumn of 2019, I visited my friend, Graham Zimmerman, at his home in Bend, Oregon. Graham is an award-winning big mountain alpinist and filmmaker, but mostly he’s a great guy; thoughtful, kind, enthusiastic, fun-loving and interesting to hang out with. So I found a way to pretend I was working and made the trek to Bend from the Seattle area. We did some work, which amounted to a photo shoot for EXPED (he’s an ambassador for the brand), and then we just chatted, went mountain biking and had couple of meals together. His significant other, Shannon, put up with all this and joined in. Good times!

The New Normal: Smoke in the Salish Sea Basin by Kaj Bune

Growing up in Seattle, I never experienced smoke like we had recently. In fact, I don’t remember ever having significant smoke in the air at any time of the year, up until the past few. It was a very rare and strange thing if smoke got thick. Unfortunately, it appears that we’re in a new normal.

Here are a few of my impressions of the week-long smoke that covered the PNW in September of 2020.
